Telegram chief executive Pavel Durov sparked debate after comparing crime rates in Europe with safety levels in Dubai, saying the United Arab Emirates remains statistically safer despite ongoing missile attacks in the Gulf region. He remarked that after leaving Dubai for Europe, he felt more exposed to risk given Europe’s crime rates, even with regional tensions escalating in the Middle East.
Tesla chief executive Elon Musk responded in agreement, stating that while no country is perfect, Dubai and the United Arab Emirates are objectively safer and better governed than many parts of Europe. Their exchange drew attention as conflict intensified following joint United States and Israeli strikes that killed Iran’s supreme leader and triggered retaliatory attacks.
The escalating war has led to missile strikes, attacks on oil infrastructure, shipping disruptions, canceled flights, deadly protests, and rising oil prices. United States President Donald Trump said the goal of the military campaign is to eliminate Iran’s naval and missile capabilities and prevent it from acquiring nuclear weapons, adding that the operation could last several weeks.
