First Hijab-wearing pageant queen crowned in Muslim-majority suburb

Ameera Hashwi, a law school graduate from Dearborn Heights, Michigan, has made history as the first hijab-wearing woman to be crowned Miss Wayne County. Her victory in the Muslim-majority suburb of Detroit marks a significant milestone for representation and inclusion in the pageant world. Hashwi's chosen initiative, Step Up & Serve, aims to promote physical fitness and empower communities through acts of service.

During the competition, Hashwi impressed the audience with a vocal performance of an Arabic classic, highlighting her cultural heritage. Her win not only secures her a place at the Miss Michigan pageant but also offers a chance to compete on the national Miss America stage, where she hopes to further advocate for diversity and redefine traditional beauty standards.

Hashwi's achievement follows in the footsteps of other trailblazers who have challenged norms in pageantry, including Halima Aden, who competed in a hijab and burkini in Minnesota in 2016. Hashwi's journey reflects the evolving landscape of pageants, embracing greater inclusion and celebrating diverse backgrounds.
