Human rights 'worsened' in Britain under Labour, finds US report

A recent report from the United States State Department has found that human rights conditions in Britain deteriorated last year, highlighting increased anti-Semitic violence and growing restrictions on free speech. The report cited credible evidence of serious limitations on freedom of expression, including laws establishing restricted zones around abortion clinics and the prosecution of individuals for silent protests. It also noted a rise in anti-Semitic incidents following attacks in Israel and pointed to government interventions that allegedly censored political speech, especially after the Southport murders.

The assessment echoed concerns previously raised by United States officials, who criticized the British government's approach to free speech and religious liberties. While the report acknowledged effective enforcement of laws protecting workers' rights and freedom of association, it concluded that prosecution for human rights abuses was inconsistent. The United Kingdom government responded by affirming its commitment to upholding free speech while ensuring citizen safety.
