Toronto Film festival 'pulls October 7 documentary'

The Toronto International Film Festival has withdrawn the documentary 'The Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue', which depicts the events of the October 7 massacre in Israel. The decision was made after organisers failed to secure permission from Hamas to use bodycam footage filmed by the attackers, raising concerns about copyright and potential legal risks. The film, directed by Barry Avrich, follows retired general Noam Tibon's efforts to rescue his family during the attack, which resulted in over a thousand deaths and hundreds taken hostage.

The festival cited the need to protect itself from legal implications and manage anticipated protests as reasons for pulling the film. The filmmakers expressed disappointment, accusing the festival of censorship and arguing that film festivals should foster debate and allow audiences to make their own judgments. Israeli officials also criticised the move, calling it an insult to the victims and a surrender to pressure. Despite the cancellation, the filmmakers remain determined to release the documentary through other channels.
