Haredi lawmakers are urging Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and military officials to permit yeshiva students who have avoided army conscription to travel abroad for the High Holidays, particularly for the annual Rosh Hashanah pilgrimage to Uman, Ukraine. Shas party leader Aryeh Deri has been negotiating with the government and military to allow these men, currently under travel bans, to make the religious journey, arguing that it is a spiritual obligation rather than leisure. The government has allocated nearly $3 million to support the pilgrimage, with funds distributed across several ministries to cover flights and logistics, including compensation for Moldova, which will assist with transit due to the lack of direct flights to Ukraine. United Torah Judaism leaders have also requested that Hasidic Jews be allowed to travel to New York and other destinations for the holidays, emphasizing the spiritual importance of these trips. Despite ongoing safety concerns from Ukrainian authorities amid the war, Israeli officials continue to coordinate with Moldova to facilitate the pilgrimage, which is expected to see 50,000 participants this year.
