Revealed: What Mary Magdalene REALLY looked like, according to experts

Recent research led by Professor Joan Taylor of King's College London challenges traditional Western portrayals of Mary Magdalene as a young and beautiful woman. According to historical evidence and textile findings, Mary would have had an eastern Mediterranean appearance, with olive-brown skin, dark features, and long, braided hair. She likely stood around 4 feet 8 inches tall and wore brightly coloured tunics, headscarves, and simple leather sandals, reflecting the modest dress of women in her time.

Facial reconstructions based on supposed relics suggest a round face with high cheekbones and a pointed nose, though the authenticity of these remains is unconfirmed. Unlike the glamorous depictions in art and film, Mary was probably indistinguishable from other women, with little to no jewellery or accessories, as early Christian teachings discouraged adornment. Her age remains unknown, but she was likely an adult woman with resources, supporting Jesus's work.

This new perspective highlights how cultural interpretations have shaped Mary Magdalene's image, contrasting sharply with historical realities. The findings invite a reconsideration of how significant biblical figures are visually represented in modern media.
