Israel's Health Ministry has reported the death of a seven-year-old boy from Jerusalem due to measles, marking the ninth fatality since the outbreak began. The child, who had an underlying medical condition and had received one dose of the measles vaccine, is the first among the fatalities to have been partially vaccinated or to have pre-existing health issues. Currently, sixteen patients are hospitalized with measles, including eight in intensive care.
Authorities have emphasized the importance of seeking medical attention at the first sign of symptoms and reiterated that measles is preventable through vaccination. In response to the outbreak, the Ministry has adjusted its vaccination guidelines, lowering the age for the second dose and offering an additional dose to infants in affected areas. Several cities and regions are considered outbreak zones, and residents there can access vaccinations without an appointment.
Vaccination rates have surged in Jerusalem and Beit Shemesh following intensive outreach efforts, with first-dose coverage among young children rising significantly. The Ministry continues to advise unvaccinated individuals and parents of infants who have received only one dose to avoid large gatherings in outbreak areas.
