Israel Police have announced plans to upgrade their speed enforcement system by introducing smart cameras that measure the average speed of vehicles over long road sections. These new cameras, set to become operational in the third quarter of 2026, will replace the current spot-speed cameras and are equipped with advanced video analytics to identify vehicle type and color. The initiative aims to bring Israel in line with international standards, as the country currently relies heavily on manual enforcement and has far fewer cameras per capita than leading nations. The tender for the project includes the installation of 250 cameras across 125 road sections, with strict technical requirements targeting experienced suppliers. While the size of fines will remain unchanged for now, the more comprehensive monitoring is expected to increase the number of tickets issued, as it will be harder for drivers to evade detection by slowing down only at known camera locations.
