Kibbutz Kissufim, located near the Gaza border, is embarking on a significant rebuilding effort after suffering devastating losses during the October 7 attack. The community, which lost 14 residents and six foreign workers, is currently living in temporary housing but hopes to return home next summer. Plans are underway to double the population, with dozens of new families eager to join and contribute to the kibbutz's revival.
The kibbutz will construct 25 new housing units over the next few years, supported by state funding and community contributions. Despite challenges such as rising construction costs and emotional trauma, the residents remain committed to restoring their communal way of life and welcoming new members. The rebuilt dairy, named in honor of a slain manager, and the opening of a new kindergarten signal hope and renewal for the future.
While the physical reconstruction is progressing, emotional recovery remains a concern, with calls for a state commission of inquiry into the events of October 7. The community is determined to rebuild trust and create a safe, vibrant environment for both returning and new residents.
