1,300-year-old menorah pendant suggests Rome's ban on Jews from Jerusalem was a failure

A 1,300-year-old lead pendant decorated with a seven-branched menorah has been discovered at the Davidson Archaeological Park in Jerusalem, challenging the long-held belief that Jews were entirely banned from the city after the Roman destruction of the Second Temple. The artifact, found near the Temple Mount and dated to the late Byzantine period, suggests that Jews may have returned to Jerusalem and possibly lived there, despite official prohibitions. Archaeologists point to similar finds in the area, including a house with menorah paintings, as further evidence of a Jewish presence during this era. The pendant, possibly used as an amulet, is unique among archaeological discoveries and will be displayed during Hanukkah, while ongoing excavations may yield more insights into the city's complex history.
