The new Military Advocate General, Itai Ofir, has closed the criminal case against reserve officer Yoav Yarom, who was previously facing charges over a deadly incident in southern Lebanon in November 2024 that resulted in the deaths of a soldier and a civilian researcher. Instead of criminal prosecution, Yarom will face disciplinary action within the military. The decision follows new testimony and evidence, as well as opinions from commanders regarding the operational necessity of the visit that led to the ambush. The families of the victims were informed of the decision, with the family of the fallen soldier expressing shock and frustration at the reversal of the prosecution's earlier intent to indict Yarom. The military investigation concluded that the site visit was planned for operational reasons and that it was not legally possible to refute Yarom's claims about the purpose of the mission.
