Former hostage Segev Kalfon shared his experiences of maintaining his spirit and Jewish identity during captivity in an interview. He described how he marked Hanukkah twice while longing for his family's bakery and worrying about his parents. To preserve his faith, Kalfon obtained a needle and thread from his captors under the pretense of repairing clothes and used them to sew kippahs from a galabiya for himself and other hostages, embroidering each with a name. Wearing the kippahs was risky, as they had to hide them from their captors, and Kalfon recounted a close call when he almost got caught during a prayer.
