The Israel Dog Unit, a nonprofit specializing in working dogs, participated in an overnight training exercise with the Haruv special forces unit in northern Israel. This marked the first joint drill of its kind for the Haruv unit and took place on the final night of Hanukkah, beginning with a candle-lighting ceremony in the field.
During the 12-hour exercise, handlers from the Israel Dog Unit acted as opposing forces, challenging the soldiers with scenarios designed to test decision-making and maneuvering under pressure. The drill simulated escape and evasion situations in both natural and urban environments, using trained dogs, drones, and specialized vehicles.
Commanders from both groups highlighted the benefits of the cooperation, noting that it improved the readiness of combat soldiers and enhanced the search-and-rescue and pursuit capabilities of the dog handlers. The exercise was seen as a significant step in strengthening coordination between the two units and preparing for real-world operational challenges.
