Israel has made headlines by officially recognizing Somaliland as an independent nation, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu signing the recognition papers during a live phone call with Somaliland's president. Netanyahu described the event as 'historic' and expressed intentions to include Somaliland in the Abraham Accords. However, the move has sparked international controversy, as the United States, under President Donald Trump, has declined to support Israel's decision.
Somalia has strongly condemned the recognition, viewing it as a violation of its sovereignty. The decision has also drawn criticism from the African Union, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Djibouti, all of whom warn that it could destabilize both the Horn of Africa and the broader Middle East region.
