A petition has been submitted to Israel's Supreme Court alleging that the State enforces the Draft Law in a discriminatory manner, targeting only haredi individuals for military service while exempting other groups. The petition, filed by the Emet Leyaakov organization, claims that enforcement measures such as arrests and economic sanctions are applied almost exclusively to the haredi community, with other populations facing no similar obligations or penalties. The petitioners argue that these sanctions, including the denial of education budgets and subsidies, amount to collective punishment without legal basis or individual examination, harming innocent citizens, particularly children and working women.
The petition also challenges the State's justification for exempting other groups from military service, noting that members of these populations serve in sensitive roles elsewhere and could be required to perform National Service. The petitioners demand the immediate cancellation of all economic sanctions, the return of collected funds, and the establishment of a uniform draft mechanism for all citizens. They also call for the recognition of Torah study as a significant civic contribution and urge the Supreme Court to uphold equality and prevent selective enforcement of the law.
