Governor Josh Shapiro revealed in his new memoir that, during the vetting process to become Kamala Harris's running mate, he was asked if he was a 'double agent for Israel.' The New York Times reported that Harris's team questioned Shapiro extensively about Israel, leading him to wonder if he was singled out as the only Jewish candidate. Shapiro found the inquiry offensive but was told it was a necessary part of the process.

Despite concerns raised by some about antisemitism in the selection process, Shapiro stated that he did not believe antisemitism played a role in Harris's choice of Tim Walz as her running mate. Aaron Keyak, a former official who monitored antisemitism, condemned the double agent question as an 'antisemitic inquiry' and said similar questions have been posed to other Jewish political appointees. Keyak called for higher standards within the Democratic Party, especially ahead of the next presidential campaign.
