FIFA chief forced to apologise to Brit football fans

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has issued an apology for comments he made about British football fans, which were widely criticised as inaccurate and insensitive. Infantino's remarks at the World Economic Forum suggested that the World Cup in Qatar was notable for having no British fans arrested, a statement challenged by both supporters' groups and UK policing officials. In a recent interview, Infantino clarified that his intent was to highlight the peaceful nature of the tournament and praised English fans for their positive participation.

Infantino also defended awarding the inaugural FIFA peace prize to United States president Donald Trump, citing his role in brokering a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. The decision has drawn scrutiny due to recent US actions abroad, but Infantino maintained that Trump deserved recognition for his efforts in conflict resolution.

Additionally, Infantino stated that FIFA and European football authorities would consider lifting the ban on Russian teams, arguing that exclusion has only fostered frustration and division. He suggested that allowing Russian youth teams to compete internationally could promote unity. FIFA recently announced plans for new under-15 football festivals, open to all member associations, as part of its commitment to inclusivity.

Infantino dismissed the possibility of a boycott of the upcoming World Cup over US domestic and foreign policies, emphasizing the importance of football as a unifying force in a divided world.
