A drug trafficker linked to the murder of Colombian footballer Andrés Escobar has been shot dead in Mexico. The original killing of Escobar took place during a turbulent era in Colombia, when the influence of drug lord Pablo Escobar was felt across the country, including its football scene. Investigators revealed that Galán and his brother confronted Andrés Escobar at a nightclub shortly after Escobar's infamous own goal in the 1994 World Cup. Their driver, Humberto Muñoz Castro, confessed to shooting Escobar multiple times, reportedly shouting 'Goal!' with each shot. Muñoz Castro was sentenced to 43 years in prison but was released after serving 11 years.
