A 3,500-year-old stone sculpture, believed to have been stolen from Luxor during the Arab Spring, has been returned to Egypt by the Netherlands. The artifact, depicting a high-ranking official from the era of Pharaoh Thutmose III, came to the attention of authorities after concerns about its provenance were raised at an art fair in Maastricht in 2022. Following a joint investigation involving Dutch, British, and Spanish experts and authorities, the sculpture was confirmed as authentic and determined to have been illegally taken from Egypt. The return was conducted under the 1970 United Nations cultural heritage convention, with a formal handover ceremony at the Egyptian embassy in The Hague. Dutch officials expressed regret over the looting and emphasized the importance of returning cultural artifacts to their rightful home.
