Israel backs United Nations vote voicing support for Ukraine, as US abstains

The United Nations General Assembly approved a resolution reaffirming support for Ukraine on the fourth anniversary of Russia’s invasion, backing the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders. The measure passed with 107 votes in favor, 12 against and 51 abstentions, including the United States.

Israel voted in favor of the resolution, breaking with the United States, which chose to abstain. Israel’s ambassador said both countries weighed different considerations, including prior Russian voting patterns and specific language in the text. The resolution also called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire and a comprehensive, just and lasting peace.

The abstention reflected a broader shift in Washington’s approach since President Donald Trump returned to office, with the United States expressing concern that certain wording could complicate diplomatic efforts. Despite this, leaders of the Group of Seven reaffirmed their support for Ukraine.

Alongside its vote, Israel announced it would send 117 power generators to the Kyiv region to assist with urgent energy needs amid continued attacks on infrastructure. While Israel has avoided supplying weapons to Ukraine, it has expanded humanitarian assistance and diplomatic engagement, including plans for a strategic dialogue focused on the Iranian threat.
