'Hubs of violence': New petition would force colleges to come clean on protest assaults

America First Legal has filed a petition urging the Department of Education to require colleges and universities to regularly disclose all instances of politically or religiously motivated violence occurring on or near campus. The group argues that institutions meant to foster free exchange of ideas have instead become 'hubs of violence and intimidation' and that students and parents deserve greater transparency.

The petition cites recent campus unrest, including protests at the University of California at Berkeley that led to arrests and a federal investigation, as well as demonstrations at the University of Michigan and Columbia University tied to the war in Gaza. Concerns over safety and discrimination, particularly involving Jewish students, prompted the Trump administration to freeze significant federal funding at several universities and reach a financial settlement with Northwestern University.

America First Legal contends that many incidents of political violence are not fully captured under current reporting requirements. The group is calling for changes to federal law that would mandate schools to publish detailed Political and Religious Violence Transparency Reports and warns that institutions failing to comply should face fines, penalties, or loss of federal funding. The Department of Education has not yet responded to the petition.
