President Donald Trump said he is considering Senator Ted Cruz of Texas for a future Supreme Court nomination, joking that Cruz would receive unanimous support from both parties because lawmakers would want to 'get him out' of Congress. Trump made the remarks during an event in Corpus Christi, Texas, praising Cruz as talented and intelligent while teasing him as a political irritant.
Cruz has significant legal experience, having argued nine cases before the Supreme Court, including work as Solicitor General of Texas. Before his election to the Senate in 2012, he had tried more Supreme Court cases than any other practicing lawyer in Texas or any member of Congress at the time. Since taking office in 2013, he has focused on limited government, economic growth and national security.
During the same appearance, Trump also discussed rising tensions with Iran, saying the United States faces a major decision on whether to carry out military strikes. He said he consulted Cruz and other lawmakers on the matter, emphasizing both the possibility of force and his preference for reaching a meaningful agreement.
