Senator Mark Kelly sharply criticized President Donald Trump over the recent United States and Israel strikes on Iran, arguing that a random group of people 'off the street' could handle the situation better than the current administration. Speaking during a television interview, Kelly questioned whether the president and his national security team fully grasp the gravity of the conflict and its risks to American service members.
Kelly, a combat veteran of the first Gulf War, contrasted the current leadership with his former military commander, whom he described as deeply aware of the life and death stakes of military action. He expressed concern that six American service members have died and said he doubts whether the president understands his responsibility to protect troops and citizens.
The strikes, which Trump announced over the weekend, have continued as the Defense Department released video highlighting the military's capabilities and precision. Kelly also faulted the president for not more fully addressing the Iran strategy during the State of the Union address or explaining how military action would benefit Americans facing high living costs.
Other Democratic leaders echoed the criticism, warning against deeper involvement in another prolonged Middle East conflict and accusing the administration of prioritizing military spending over domestic economic relief. A White House spokesperson defended the president, saying the administration is advancing both military objectives abroad and economic policies at home.
