Clandestine intelligence units within the Israel Defense Forces played a central role in locating and targeting a secret underground bunker used by Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran. The elite signals intelligence unit responsible for intercepting communications and cyber operations, along with the military’s visual intelligence unit that analyzes satellite and surveillance imagery, provided key information to the air force.
According to military officials, approximately 50 aircraft struck the subterranean complex, which spanned several city blocks and included multiple entrances. More than 100 munitions were used in the operation, targeting what was described as a critical command center from which Khamenei and other senior officials managed the country during times of crisis.
Although Khamenei had been killed days earlier at a separate command site, the military said the bunker remained a strategic asset for Iran’s leadership. Its destruction was intended to further degrade the regime’s ability to conduct and coordinate wartime operations.
