The exhibition Yakir's Light at the Jerusalem Theatre brings together the artwork of Chaya Hexter and her son Yakir Hexter, an architecture student and combat engineer who was killed in Gaza in January 2024. Combining Chaya’s photographs of grief with Yakir’s drawings, architectural plans, and personal photographs, the show creates a powerful dialogue between a bereaved mother and the son she continues to discover through his art.
Chaya began photographing moments of loss after Yakir’s death, documenting military notices, personal belongings, and quiet scenes that reflect the disorientation of mourning. Alongside her work are Yakir’s sketchbooks and architectural projects, revealing a gifted and imaginative young artist whose designs blended philosophy, humanity, and urban vision. His creations range from organic tree houses to conceptual urban renewal plans, highlighting both technical skill and creative daring.
The exhibition also portrays Yakir’s character: an athlete, volunteer, and devoted friend who returned to military service out of loyalty to his comrades. Through images and selected texts, the show emphasizes his humanity, creativity, and moral conviction even in wartime. Curated as a shared artistic space, Yakir's Light seeks not only to memorialize Yakir’s life but also to offer a space for collective reflection and healing when the theater reopens to the public.
