Ahmed Nasser, head of the Arraba council in the Lower Galilee, was shot on Sunday evening in the town and sustained moderate injuries. Anwar Yassin, head of the local popular committee and a council member, was also shot and moderately wounded. Both men were evacuated to hospital for treatment.
Police forces were dispatched in large numbers to Arraba following reports of the shooting. Officers launched extensive searches for suspects and set up checkpoints on roads leading out of the town.
Nasser had previously been under significant threat from criminal elements, reportedly linked in part to disputes over municipal tenders.
