A 41-year-old Lebanese-born man rammed his car into Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, before opening fire through his windshield as dozens of children were inside. Authorities said he waited outside the synagogue for about two hours before the हमला. An armed security guard exchanged gunfire with him, and officials later confirmed the attacker fatally shot himself after becoming trapped in his burning vehicle.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation and described the घटना as violence targeting the Jewish community, though officials said there is not yet enough evidence to classify it as terrorism. Large quantities of commercial-grade fireworks and containers of a liquid believed to be gasoline were found in the vehicle. None of the 140 children, teachers, or staff inside the synagogue were injured, though a security officer was struck by the vehicle and dozens of responding officers were treated for smoke inhalation.
Investigators said the attacker had recently learned that four relatives, including two brothers reportedly affiliated with Hezbollah, were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon. He had previously been flagged in government databases for connections to Hezbollah members but was not believed to be part of the group. Community leaders condemned the violence, emphasizing that grief over overseas conflict does not justify attacks on houses of worship.
Temple Israel, one of the largest Reform synagogues in the nation, had recently strengthened its security measures, including hiring a full-time security director and conducting active shooter training. State leaders praised the synagogue’s private security team, saying their swift response likely prevented a far greater tragedy.
