President Donald Trump called on other nations to help safeguard the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing that many global economies rely heavily on the vital shipping route. Speaking at a meeting with the Trump Kennedy Center Board Members, he argued that while the United States receives less than one percent of its oil through the strait, several European nations depend on it far more.
Trump stated that the United States has taken aggressive action against Iran, targeting its defense and industrial infrastructure and destroying more than thirty vessels allegedly used for laying naval mines. He said these efforts were aimed at weakening Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping and to rebuild its missile and drone capabilities.
Despite these actions, Trump warned that the narrow waterway remains vulnerable to disruption by small scale attacks. He urged allied nations to take a more active role in protecting the strait, arguing that the responsibility should be shared given their economic dependence on the route.
