United Nations Secretary General António Guterres said the organization is cooperating actively with Donald Trump's Board of Peace on efforts to fund and deliver reconstruction in Gaza. He welcomed the board’s objective, which was approved by the Security Council, but said its role should be limited to rebuilding homes and infrastructure rather than addressing broader political issues.
Guterres stressed that any peace initiative must adhere to international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter. He also called for de escalation in the war involving Iran, including reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and suggested the United Nations could help protect the waterway. He confirmed he has not spoken directly with Trump since the conflict began but has engaged with other administration officials.
Envoys from the Board of Peace recently met with representatives of Hamas in Cairo to help preserve the Gaza ceasefire. Shortly after the meeting, Israel announced it would reopen the pedestrian crossing between Gaza and Egypt, a move one source linked to the talks.
Guterres acknowledged ongoing concerns about the effectiveness of the Security Council, citing the veto power held by its permanent members France, China, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. He proposed reforms to make the council more representative and limit veto use, while also criticizing restrictions that have limited humanitarian access in Gaza.
