A new national poll finds that most Americans oppose the war with Iran and want it to end quickly, with 92 percent saying a swift conclusion is important. Sixty percent now oppose the conflict, up from earlier in the month, and two thirds describe it as a 'war of choice' rather than a necessity. Many also say the administration has not clearly explained its goals.

At the same time, large majorities support key objectives related to Iran. Eighty percent say it is important to ensure the Iranian people are safe and free, 73 percent want the Islamic Republic's nuclear program permanently ended, and 68 percent want to prevent Iran from threatening other countries. Just over half say it would be unacceptable to end the war with the current regime still in power.

Americans are divided over the war's impact on national safety. Nearly half believe the conflict will make the country less safe in the short term, and more respondents foresee decreased safety than increased safety over the long term. A narrow majority also believes sending ground troops would be unnecessary.

Support for military action is heavily concentrated among Republicans, particularly those aligned with the Make America Great Again movement, while Democrats and independents largely oppose the war.
