UK Jews 'anxious but resilient' after ambulance attack highlights rising antisemitism

Four ambulances belonging to a Jewish volunteer rescue service were destroyed in an arson attack in northwest London, intensifying fears within the United Kingdom's Jewish community amid a surge in antisemitic incidents. Counterterrorism police are investigating the attack, which was claimed by a little known group believed to have links to Iran. Community members described feelings of anger and anxiety but also determination to continue their work and daily lives.

The attack follows a series of recent antisemitic incidents, including alleged hostile surveillance of Jewish sites and a deadly assault at a synagogue in Manchester. According to the Community Security Trust, thousands of antisemitic incidents were recorded last year, marking one of the highest totals on record. Jewish leaders say the community feels anxious but resilient, emphasizing that synagogues, schools and charities remain open despite heightened security concerns.

Reports indicate that antisemitism has spread into universities and healthcare settings, with many Jewish students and patients experiencing hostility since the outbreak of the Gaza war in October 2023. The government has pledged support and funding for security, and Prime Minister Keir Starmer has committed to accelerating reviews into antisemitism in public institutions.

While some British Jews are questioning their long term future in the country, others remain hopeful that extremism represents a vocal minority. Community leaders stress that antisemitism is a broader threat to British society and insist that Jewish life in the United Kingdom will endure despite mounting challenges.
