The United States is withdrawing hundreds of troops from northeastern Syria as the security environment in the country shifts. The military is closing three of its operating bases in the northeast, reducing troop levels from 2,000 to 1,400. American commanders will assess whether to make additional cuts after 60 days. The Islamic State remains a threat in the region, but the fall of President Bashar al-Assad's regime has reduced other threats, such as Iran-backed militias and Russian troops. The U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces have agreed to integrate into the new Syrian state, including its oil and gas fields.
