Edelstein emphasized that he will not accept ultimatums and that a strict timeline could lead to a bad legislative outcome. The committee will continue to hear testimony and background data before drafting a final version of the bill. The ultra-Orthodox coalition partners of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have been pushing for legislation enshrining military exemptions for yeshiva students and other members of the Haredi community. The High Court ruled last year that the dispensations were illegal. Edelstein has long opposed the legislation and has called for mass mobilization of Haredi men.
