Israel celebrated its first successful artificial heart transplant at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem on May 25, followed by a second successful transplant at Sheba Medical Center in Ramat Gan. The Aeson artificial hearts used in the procedures have only been employed in 114 such surgeries worldwide. The male patients, one in his 50s and the other in his 60s, suffered from biventricular heart failure, awaiting heart transplants and at imminent risk of death.
