In a letter to committee members, Afik stressed that removing a sitting chair for political reasons should only occur in exceptional circumstances, and that doing so now could cast doubt on the legitimacy of any legislation regarding Haredi enlistment. Afik further noted that if Bismuth is seen as pre-committed to a specific version of the bill, the legislative process would be fundamentally flawed. She urged that the committee's work be guided by thorough deliberation rather than political pressures. The proposed leadership change comes amid pressure from Haredi parties seeking mass exemptions for yeshiva students from military service, with a formal vote on Bismuth's appointment scheduled for tomorrow.
