The United Nations has expressed deep concern over reports that Israel may expand its military operations throughout the Gaza Strip, warning that such actions could have catastrophic consequences and further endanger hostages. During a Security Council meeting, UN Assistant Secretary-General Miroslav Jenca emphasized the need for a permanent ceasefire, immediate release of hostages, and unimpeded humanitarian aid to Gaza. He reiterated that Gaza must remain part of a future Palestinian state and called for a political solution based on the establishment of two states living side by side in peace.
Israeli foreign minister Gideon Saar, addressing the session, criticized recent moves by several countries to recognize a Palestinian state, arguing that these actions undermined ceasefire negotiations and incentivized continued conflict. Saar insisted that international pressure should focus on Hamas, which he holds responsible for both starting and prolonging the war.
