An Uncertain Path to Peace in Ukraine
Recent meetings at the White House between President Trump, President Zelensky of Ukraine, and European leaders yielded few signs of progress toward peace in Ukraine. While Trump expressed intentions to facilitate a meeting between Zelensky and Putin, skepticism remains as Russia has not formally agreed to talks and its foreign minister downplayed the possibility.
Ukraine is set to receive significant military aid from the United States, including air defense systems and war planes, though funding details are unclear and European allies may cover much of the cost. Security guarantees for Ukraine remain unresolved, with no formal agreement reached and ongoing debate about the role of international forces. European leaders, including Britain's prime minister, have proposed stationing troops in Ukraine, but Russia has consistently rejected such deployments.
Despite the lack of breakthroughs, Zelensky was warmly received in Washington and secured promises of weapon sales and diplomatic efforts. Meanwhile, Russia continues its military assault on Ukraine, with overnight bombardments intensifying the conflict.
