Syria postpones selection of lawmakers from Druze and Kurdish-held areas

Syria's new authorities have postponed the selection of lawmakers for the transitional parliament in Druze-majority Sweida and two Kurdish-held provinces. The process, originally scheduled for mid-September, will be delayed in these regions due to ongoing security challenges and tensions. Local bodies are set to appoint two-thirds of the parliament, with the remainder named by President Ahmed al-Sharaa, but representation for Sweida, Raqqa, and Hasakeh will be reserved until conditions improve. The interim constitution and selection process have faced criticism for centralizing power and not adequately reflecting Syria's diverse communities.
