Abrego Garcia Was Detained Again

Kilmar Abrego Garcia, an immigrant who was previously wrongfully expelled to El Salvador, has been detained again at an immigration office in Baltimore just days after his release. The Trump administration now plans to deport him to Uganda, prompting his lawyers to file a habeas petition to halt his removal. A judge has temporarily barred the government from deporting him while she reviews the petition, and Abrego Garcia remains in custody in Virginia. His legal team accuses officials of coercion, claiming he was pressured to plead guilty to human smuggling charges in exchange for a promise of safe passage to Costa Rica, otherwise facing deportation to Uganda.

Elsewhere, Israeli strikes on a hospital in Gaza killed 20 people, including medical staff and journalists, with Prime Minister Netanyahu apologizing and promising an investigation. In New York City, social clubs backed by China have influenced local elections, targeting politicians critical of China's government. New research suggests heat waves may accelerate biological aging, and other top news includes a pig-to-human lung transplant in China, a cartel founder pleading guilty, and Venus Williams making her 25th appearance at the U.S. Open.
