Trump Officials Move to Fire Most Voice of America Journalists

The Trump administration has initiated sweeping layoffs at Voice of America, with notices sent to over 500 employees, leaving only about 100 staff members remaining. Kari Lake, acting chief executive of the agency overseeing Voice of America and a close Trump ally, announced the move as part of an effort to refocus the organization's mission. These actions have sparked legal challenges, as a federal judge previously ordered the restoration of Voice of America and threatened to hold Lake in contempt for failing to comply.

Voice of America, which once broadcasted in 49 languages to hundreds of millions worldwide, now airs in only four languages. The layoffs follow earlier attempts to restructure the agency that were blocked due to procedural errors and legal rulings. The remaining employees have sought judicial intervention to ensure compliance with court orders, while government lawyers argue that officials have discretion over the network's operations.

The situation remains tense, with ongoing court proceedings and the possibility of further legal consequences for agency leaders. The future of Voice of America and its global broadcasting reach hangs in the balance as the administration continues its efforts to reshape the federally funded news network.
