'We will rise': Brother of hostage killed by IDF vows to build a better future

Yonatan Shamriz, whose brother Alon was taken hostage and accidentally killed by Israeli forces, spoke at a national memorial ceremony in Tel Aviv marking two years since the October 7 attack. Shamriz recounted the harrowing moments spent in a safe room with his pregnant wife and young child, and the last conversation he had with his brother before losing contact. Despite his grief, Shamriz founded the organization Kumu (Rise) and pledged to build a better future for Israel, emphasizing the resilience and unity of its people in the face of tragedy and failed leadership. He called for the return of remaining hostages and promised that his generation would lead the country toward truth, accountability, and hope, vowing to create a more just and unified society.
