Pakistani politician and author Mian Raza Rabbani has relaunched his 2020 novella, The Smile Snatchers, dedicating it to the children of Gaza in light of the ongoing conflict. At a launch event in Karachi, Rabbani expressed that the real-life suffering in Gaza has surpassed even the darkest scenarios he imagined in his fiction, stating that the devastation left him unable to write a new work. The novella, which centers on a struggling artist haunted by the plight of children in conflict zones, now serves as a tribute to Gaza's young victims.
The event was attended by senior political figures, including Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, who described the Gaza war as 'history's first live-streamed genocide.' Bhutto-Zardari welcomed the recent ceasefire but cautioned that Israel's history of violations requires vigilance, emphasizing the need for the international community to ensure the ceasefire holds. He also highlighted the broader impact of the conflict, noting that it has claimed not only children but also journalists and medical professionals.
