Pope Leo XIV has called on world leaders to take responsibility and address the urgent crises of hunger, war, and misery affecting millions globally. Speaking at the World Food Day ceremony in Rome, he highlighted the plight of 673 million people who do not have enough to eat and named ongoing conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza, Haiti, Afghanistan, Mali, the Central African Republic, Yemen, and South Sudan as areas of concern.
He urged the international community not to ignore food emergencies and condemned the use of hunger as a weapon of war, describing widespread hunger as a collective failure and ethical derailment. The pope's remarks come as food aid agencies face severe funding cuts, threatening to push millions into emergency levels of hunger in several countries.
Pope Leo concluded by challenging everyone to reexamine their lifestyles and make the suffering of the hungry their own, emphasizing the moral responsibility to act.
