Sheila Pantin, a 102-year-old World War Two veteran and longtime Harrogate resident, has been awarded the freedom of Harrogate in recognition of her extraordinary service. Pantin joined the women's branch of the British Army at 17 and was among the first British servicewomen to enter the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp after its liberation. There, she cared for women and children survivors, helping them recover from the horrors they had endured. Pantin later became a teacher and dedicated years to supporting military families. The mayor praised her for her 'impossibly difficult work' and her lifelong commitment to helping others. Pantin expressed gratitude for the honour, saying she was 'a bit overwhelmed' but willing to serve her community in any way she can.
