Michael Smuss, the last known survivor of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, has died at the age of 99. Born in 1926 in what is now Gdansk, Poland, Smuss was imprisoned in the Warsaw Ghetto during the Holocaust, where he joined the Jewish resistance. He played a key role in the uprising by making and throwing Molotov cocktails at Nazi soldiers from rooftops. Smuss survived the brutal suppression of the uprising, subsequent arrest, and several concentration camps before the end of World War II. After the war, he emigrated to the United States, later settling in Israel, where he became a painter to help process his wartime trauma.
