On October 7, 2023, the Pega outpost near the Gaza border was attacked by approximately 150 Hamas militants, while only 25 soldiers from Golani's 13th Battalion stood in defense. Despite being vastly outnumbered, the defenders fought fiercely through hours of intense combat, suffering heavy casualties. Many soldiers were killed in close-quarters fighting, and several acts of bravery were recorded, including a group who sacrificed themselves to bring fresh air to their trapped comrades as terrorists tried to burn them out. The survivors held out under siege until reinforcements arrived late in the day, marking the end of a harrowing and heroic stand.
