Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has named Hussein Al-Sheikh, his deputy and the first vice president of the Palestine Liberation Organization, as his successor in the event of a vacancy. This move comes amid the absence of a functioning parliament, which was dissolved in 2018. According to Abbas's new constitutional declaration, Al-Sheikh would temporarily assume the presidency for up to 90 days, during which elections are to be held to choose a new president. If elections cannot be conducted due to extraordinary circumstances, the Palestinian Central Council may extend the interim period once. Abbas emphasized that the decision aims to ensure stability and the peaceful transfer of power through free and fair elections.
