NYC mayor compared anti-Israel protests after Oct. 7 to KKK rallies, lawsuit says

A lawsuit filed by Hassan Naveed, the former head of New York City's office to prevent hate crimes, alleges that Mayor Adams and his administration engaged in anti-Muslim discrimination following the October 2023 Hamas attack on Israel. Naveed claims Adams compared anti-Israel protests in the city to Ku Klux Klan rallies and criticized the Muslim community for not sufficiently condemning Hamas. The lawsuit also accuses the administration of excluding Muslim organizations from meetings and fostering a hostile work environment.

Adams's office denies the allegations, stating Naveed was dismissed for poor job performance, not his identity or beliefs. The legal action comes amid heightened tensions in the city, with a surge in anti-Israel protests and hate crimes, and as the mayoral race heats up with Zohran Mamdani, a vocal critic of Israel, as the frontrunner. Jewish leaders have expressed concern over rising rhetoric and its potential impact on their communities.
