The United Nations Security Council has voted in favor of a resolution supporting Morocco's autonomy plan for Western Sahara, describing it as the 'most feasible' solution for the long-disputed territory. The decision marks a significant shift in international stance, with Morocco's King Mohammed VI hailing the vote as 'historic' and a step toward solidifying Moroccan sovereignty over the region. The resolution, led by the United States, received 11 votes in favor, three abstentions, and saw Algeria refuse to participate, reflecting ongoing tensions. While the move has garnered support from several European countries, Algeria and the Polisario Front have voiced strong opposition, arguing it undermines the aspirations of the people of Western Sahara. The resolution also calls for renewed negotiations and extends the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the area for another year.
