Opposition Leader Yair Lapid has sharply criticized the government's proposed bill to regulate ultra-Orthodox conscription, arguing that the approval of the measure by senior rabbis from the Degel HaTorah party reveals its true intent. Lapid asserted in the Knesset that the rabbis' support demonstrates the bill is designed to enable draft evasion rather than genuine military service reform.
During his speech, Lapid accused members of the coalition of undermining the principles of Zionism by seeking rabbinical approval to exempt tens of thousands of healthy young people from military service. He called the move a 'full-blown draft evasion law' and expressed disappointment in the government's approach to the issue.
